Flying in India

"Working with Rishworth has been excellent - the consultants are all pleasant and very helpful, and have offered outstanding advice and opportunities.  They helped me through the Air India screening, making sure everything went smoothly, and I am very pleased with the result.  Throughout my contract, Rishworth has provided a high quality service, founded in their strong sense of professionalism, integrity and expertise.  They have build lasting relationships with myself and many other pilots I know, helping and supporting us to achieve our objectives."

"Flying for Air India - Americans, Russians, Brazilians, Indians, Italians, British - all speaking the language of the B777. The hotel accommodation is excellent whether it be in Paris, London, New York, Mumbai or Delhi. What about the Indian professionalism? Excellent! The planes? New. Perfect! The cabin staff? Well I have had confirmation from the American Captains that they are better than the TWA and Pan-Am cabin crew of 40 years ago. The rosters? Initially they seem to be disorganized but in the end everything works properly. If you need to move your free days you call Crew Scheduling and they sort it out for you. There are frustrations, but I am very pleased that I decided to experience life as a contract pilot at Air India. I hope that you might decide to try it too..."

"I have been an expat pilot most of my life and have flown for many airlines.... If you want to fly the most modern and newest aircraft in the world today you can with Air India..... I can only recommend that all crew join through Rishworth Aviation as Gretchen and Toni and the other staff at Rishworth are always willing to help or available just to talk to if needed. They are there for you 24/7 - you can call them anytime night or day. Another good thing with Rishworths is that you can get income protection insurance at a very reasonable rate, which I would personally recommend for all crew."

A Pilot's Perspective

on Life in India

Mumbai

Well where to begin. This place is OTT! The colours, smells tastes and visions are extreme. The real estate is more expensive than Manhattan, some of the most valuable on the planet, so every inch is used to the max none more so than tarmac...There are thousands and thousands of cabs, black and yellow, 1950's things and one hundred thousand autorickshaws, like tuk tuks, only all painted black and yellow that swarm like wasps.  Juhu Beach is where India greets the Arabian Sea and the boundary is delineated by Johnnie Walker bottles reincarnated as kaleidoscopes of colour.  Mumbai is in a state of “WORK IN PROGRESS”. It seems that every square inch is being dug up, sifted, relocated and the shifting, sifting tools are picks, shovels, brooms and barrows.

The Flying

There is some fat in most sector times and not too difficult to stay on time with not much wind to pay havoc with the flight time but ATC seem to like some serious vectoring often down low. They speak very fast....Turnarounds are generally never less than thirty minutes. During this time a small army descend upon the aircraft. The cleaning gang come in through the cargo hold and transform the cabin to a state of orderliness....

Really enjoy the flying. The F/Os are very competent. Though they may have less than 500 hours flying time they do mountains of famils to get the procedures, checklists, callouts sorted and their trainers are incredibly demanding of them. Very procedural with absolute mountains of paperwork.  (“The rest of the world airplanes run on Jet fuel in India they run on paper”).

India

India, is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second-most populous country, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the southwest, and the Bay of Bengal on the southeast, it shares land borders with Pakistan to the west; Bhutan, the People's Republic of China and Nepal to the northeast; and Bangladesh and Burma to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka and the Maldives; in addition, India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands share a maritime border with Thailand and Indonesia.

Home to the ancient Indus Valley Civilization and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. Four of the world's major religions—Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism—originated here, while Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam arrived in the first millennium CE and shaped the region's diverse culture. Gradually annexed by the British East India Company from the early 18th century and colonised by the United Kingdom from the mid-19th century, India became an independent nation in 1947 after a struggle for independence which was marked by non-violent resistance and led by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.

The Indian economy is the world's eleventh largest by nominal GDP and fourth largest by purchasing power parity. Following market-based economic reforms in 1991, India has become one of the fastest growing major economies, and is considered a newly industrialized country; however, it continues to face the challenges of poverty, illiteracy, corruption and inadequate public health. A nuclear weapons state and a regional power, it has the third-largest standing army in the world, and ranks tenth in military expenditure among nations.

India is a federal constitutional republic with a parliamentary system consisting of 28 states and seven union territories. It is a member of the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement, the World Trade Organization, the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, the East Asia Summit, the G20, the G8+5, and the Commonwealth of Nations; and is one of the four BRIC nations. India is a pluralistic, multilingual, and multiethnic society. It is also home to a diversity of wildlife in a variety of protected habitats.
